I'm Annoyed Again.

It's almost May 2020 my time.
Still alive. Still sheltering in place.
Hi ho.

You might not be able to tell from the weird run on sentences and such but I do occasionally go back and sort of proofread this crap. I'll clarify stuff if my phrasing is weird. Put the links in that I occasionally miss and generally clean up the messy bits.

And it still comes out like it does.

So tonight I'm doing some of that and I find that of the last few rounds of this I did that half the pictures didn't upload. I ended up spending a couple of hours poring through nearly a year's worth of posts reupping sleeve scans. Irritating to say the least.


Here's some pleasant indiepop to soothe our collective souls.

Sugarstar (1998)


Poussin is the word for a young chicken, usually less than 28 days old before slaughter. Some times referred to as a "Spring Chicken"
There we both learned something today.

Poussin is also the name of this particular band that hailed from Tokyo, Japan.


I didn't look too hard, but did come up with a bio on the label website. Unfortunately it was in Japanese. Thankfully there is Google Translate which only makes it better.


"Biography:

Nakagawa Aya, a member of Colenimo who was active in 1995, started as a trio solo unit in 1998. In 1999, released 1st 7inch single "sugarstar ep" from Clover Records. Later members joined and developed into a band form. In 2003, the song "boy friend" of "pop jingu volume2" was used as an insert song for the popular American drama "Joan Of Arcadia".


This is girly indie guitar pop! One-and-only sensibilities that will make you laugh. The kitsch and sparkling sounds are cute like The Softies and Bunnygrunt."

Appendix (1993)



Iris. Yeah, not exactly an easy google for this one, but based on a pair of compilation appearances they were likely from Derby.

They did manage two each singles and full lengths. This is the first one.
You'd think with that output there'd be something more to be found.

Unfortunately I don't have a bio to run through Google Translate for you.

You'll have to just make up your own.

It's strummy and wordy and I like it.

This is Me Procrastinating

I should be making a chocolate ice cream base, but I'm putting it off for no other reason than I just don't feel like doing it right now.

Engine ep (1996)

I like nonpareils as candy.
Chocolate with the little round sugar crunchy things on top.

I also like the Nonpareils as a band.
From the same Providence, Rhode Island scene that gave us the overly earnest sounds of Small Factory (Alex Kemp of which assisted in the recording of the latter two songs here.) and the ever wonderful pop sounds of Honeybunch.

Banana (1992)

The Nelories were from Japan.

An accordion and guitar duo just like They Might Be Giants,  I learned everything I needed to know (except their hometown) from the TMBG Wiki

 This is extraordinarily pleasant listening depending on your personal tolerance for the accordion and lyrics written by someone who doesn't speak English.

(My personal tolerance is high enough that someone really ought to consider an intervention.)

The Best Part of Travel

You go to new record stores in different cities and there's always stuff you would be less likely to find in your own town.

And so it was that this was the most amazing find I had on a trip to Seattle where we traveled halfway across the country to see Scientists play on their first real US tour. And it was totally fucking worth it....

But I digress.

I also found this record.

Ki Ra I (1983)

The band is called D-Day which is different from a previously posted band with that name.

This one is a Japanese New Wave band.

This four song ep is fucking great. Each song is unique and sounds kind of unlike most anything else I can think of. It's atmospheric and experimental but never unlistenable.

 I dig it greatly.

Enough that I feel like I want to post scans of the inserts for no particular reason other than I like it so much.

Guys with Glasses (1990)

 And then there's this.

One night as we were hanging out with one of my oldest friends a couple of days after the Scientists/Mudhoney show he hands me this single because he doesn't like it and thinks I might.

I already have and have posted the double single by these guys so he obviously was correct.

Fast pop songs not very well recorded and played kind of amateurishly?

That shit's right in my wheelhouse.

It's good stuff and I'd have put this on a hundred tapes for girls if I'd known about it at the time.

Here it is the very thing you never actually knew your life had been missing for so long.

Modern Japanese neo-bossa nova.

It's like something straight out of the Katamari video game soundtrack. (Which is pretty fucking awesome in itself. I seriously bought a four disc version of that soundtrack and I'm the person who normally mutes the music as the first thing I do when setting up to play a new game...)

Long Goodbye (1999)

Here's the final single by the Hang-Ups since I got it and I needed something else to post today and I've already posted everything else I had by them last year sometime. (Do a search. I'm not your Google.) It's more of the same and will have to tide us all over until they record new material.

Which may actually happen. For an anniversary deal last year they played an in-store at the Electric Fetus with more new songs than I wanted to hear at the time. So perhaps they will reappear in another form in the near future.
