Broken Tooth

I broke a tooth a short while back. It wasn't bothering me and I had shit going on and was planning on making a dentist appointment anyway since it's been a pandemic since I went and I still have a temporary crown in from before I got COVID so I kind of  left it for a bit.

Then I finally made the dreaded call and appointment. Soonest was three and a half weeks out that fit my needs. (Life's different when you work nights) But I had one.

Naturally almost immediately after that it all hit the fan and it's not very fun trying to eat anything that requires chewing.

I called tonight and made a new appointment. It's five days out.
I'm probably gonna lose some of that post-COVID weight now...

Today It's You (1999)

The band is Marmoset

The sound is kind of angular pop music.

My best guess is that one or more of them are fans of Mayo Thompson and all who sail with him. At least that's me. I get plenty of hints of Red Krayola here and I'm entirely fine with that.

This album hung out on my phone for quite a long time before I took it off to make room for new things. Always a pleasant surprise when random play threw a track into my sonic pathway.

Probably not going to change anybody's world, but certainly a worthy distraction from the inevitability of death.

Still Quarantined Almost a Year Ago.

Like the title says.

Which is good news, since it means I was surviving into last April.

We'll see if it lasts

If nothing else this is the 700th fucking lame ass post on this shitty blog.

Seriously. WTF?

Funny (1992)

Hope.

A pretty generic name for a band which doesn't necessarily make for easy searching via the google machine and which even confused the usually pretty good cloudberry folks.

So this may or may not be the product of one person named Stuart Troop.

Not that it matters.

It was released on A Turntable Friend so you already know it's quality.

Telescope (1994)

This band calling itself the Mary Janes hailed from Indianapolis, IN and haven't apparently updated their website since 2003. It's probably safe to assume it's merely a ghost ship at this point.

According to that website "the mary janes play honest american music from the heart of the midwest."

I'm not exactly sure how that relates to what they were doing way back in 1994, but it's a description of some sort which is usually in short supply around these parts because blah blah blah "dancing about architecture"

But there's some scratchy fiddle and acoustic guitars in there.

"Telescope" is the winner here though.

I'd play that one. It's a good one

I guess We Already Crossed Oklahoma off the list.

I got excited for a second until I realized we already did an Oklahoma band.

Oh well, this is just Okie gravy...

Be a Zombie (1981)

Los Reactors, Tulsa, OK

The best punk rock band from Tulsa ever.

Big Picture EP (1980)

Last Four (4) Digits, Indianapolis, IN

There's a song called "Coughing Up Blood"
You'll like this one.

Stuck in the Middle

After a couple of Bi-Coastal posts we pause for a moment and wonder:

"What about the fly over country? What was going on there?"

I have an answer

Certain Death (1983)

Killing Children were from Columbus, Indiana.
Accept no substitutes or alternate Columbuses.
This is the only one.

It's nice to add some straight up punk rock to this mix now and again.
Keeps life interesting

and speaking of interesting

Learn Greek in Greece (1980)

Otto Kentrol is the nom de saxophone of one Bill Ylitalo who went on to play with a shit load of other bands including Appliances SFB & God is my Co-Pilot who I've posted before. (I'm pretty sure I did anyway. You look and tell me...)

This is fractured weirdness that tickles my fancy like a fancy French tickler in my earholes.

Damn it. Now my ears are itchy.

Hoosiers Again

When last we had a moment and were posting compilations it was of various 1960's groups from the Midwestern state of Indiana.
I've driven through it. I spent one absolutely miserable Christmas in Indianapolis with a girlfriend and her mother who a) wasn't informed that I was coming and b) took a somewhat instant dislike to me.

Good times. Good Times.

But then there's this, so I don't know what to think...

Hoosier Hysteria (1980)

This album splits neatly between the art damaged nonsense of Dow Jones & the Industrials and the rocking of the Gizmos 2.0 (aka. the Dale Lawrence era) The big fish in the Bloomington, IN pond.

Now I could sit her and neatly type up the track breakdown of each side. But that seems as unnecessary as this record is necessary.
If you're here, you probably already have an idea of what it's about.
Go with your gut. Listen and enjoy the fuck out of it.
It's awesome.

Hotshots from the Hoosier State

It's the 13th.

This one is entitled Hoosier Hotshots.

It's a compilation of various Indiana bands of the 1960s.

It should not be confused with the vaudeville musical group of the 1930-40s that also went by the name of the Hoosier Hotshots. They are very different things.

Last post of this batch

I've been working on posts all fucking day.

I lost count. It's over a dozen anyway

I've been trying hard to finish up this batch of stuff so I can start digitizing new stuff because I kind of would rather be listening to music than typing about it.
But one drives the other and at this pace I'm rapidly closing in on a point where I'm queuing up posts a full year in advance of when they will appear.
That's kind of scary and daunting.

Here's the Gizmos

Never Mind the Sex Pistols (1978)

It's the Gizmos 2.0. from Bloomington, IN.
The Dale Lawrence version.
This is the revamped incarnation's first record on Gulcher.
I like it.

That is all.

Get Smart Live (1984)

From Lawrence, Kansas.

(You can check Kansas off your fifty states scorecard now)

This is Get Smart! live at CBGB's.

Doo dah Doo dah Day.

The difference a D makes

It was so much presumable fun posting like named bands last time I'm going to do it again.

From Chicago. They apparently aren't big fans of paperwork and offices. They do apparently enjoy Buddy Holly enough to garage up a version of "Not Fade Away" on the b-side. Though it may be that they only learned the song from the Rolling Stones.

the Endd - Project Blue (1966)

From LaPorte, Indiana. Our first Hoosier record, I think. This is one of those great fuzz records. The b-side here is a cover of the Banshees recording of "Project Blue",  the fuzz makes it worth the trip. I think I like the sparer sound of the Endd myself. For my tastes though the Plug Side "Out of my Hands" is the fucking money shot. It's a heartfelt fuzz ballad. He met somebody new and he can't help himself. It's biology, baby. Teen tragedy at its finest and that drum fill just slays me.

Puppies in a Sack

Sometimes there's just not a lot to say and the music needs to speak for itself.

the Delphobics (1980)

For the most part, I've always found NYC to be highly overrated for music. There were certainly some great and highly influential bands that came from there that I absolutely love, but lots and lots of half baked crap that people still make a fuss over simply because it arose from a famous place that smells like urine and desperation.

This single isn't one of those however. They fittingly called their record label "Fake Doom" It's perfect listening for quiet nights in the bunker with a can of tinned meat.

Dancing Cigarettes ( 1981)

Bloomington Indiana. It had an extremely vibrant little music scene at the same time that all everything else was going down everywhere else and the world only paid attention to London and New York. It's way too bad because there was some great stuff happening there where the folks were making music for the sole reason of amusing themselves without any real dream of a write up in Creem magazine. Gulcher Records documented a lot of it. Here's a fine example of that. It's odd in all the right ways.
