Names

Yeah. Here we go again.

 Here Comes Everybody (1993)

The band is called Me.

Not exactly the best name for a group in the internet era.
But then they started with Me Fertile which while unique is not exactly an improvement.

But it's some lovely pop otherwise. Released on the SpinArt label.

Harmonise or Haunt (1993)

The single was followed up by a full length of more of the same.
I had this on the phone for quite a long time if that helps.
I like a good pop song with some dreamy harmonizing.

I Don't Know What to Do With Splits Pt 3.

More Splits

This is a pair of Flexis.

Adjust sonic expectations accordingly.

Choo Choo Train/ Eye Pilgrims (1989)

Choo Choo Train. Ric Menck & Paul Chastain pre-Velvet Crush.

Eye Pilgrims were from Hartlepool, UK and only existed on various compilations which is a bit of shame. I like their contribution here.

Spinning Jennys/the Fat Tulips (1990)

I have no idea where precisely Spinning Jennys were from. (I went with Bristol since that's where the label that put out their sole single was based.) It's unfortunate because their song here is fucking great. A masterwork of the genre. Kudos to them.

The Fat Tulips hailed from Peterborough. They put out a bunch of seven inches but only managed a singular full length in their career. Several of those releases were on Sunday Records. You know what you're getting into with that.

That said. Probably not my favorite song of theirs that I've heard so far.

Play the other one.

I Don't Know What To Do With Splits

I'm roasting a chicken stuffed with onion, apples and sage.
I'm going to throw the remaining apples and onions that wouldn't fit along with beets around the chicken to roast with it and in the juice in a little bit.

I've got potatoes ready to go as well.

A nice rounded meal.

But in the meantime, I have a little time to kill.
I also realized that there were a number of split singles & flexi discs clogging up the epic SSC folder that I wasn't sure what to do with.
I'd vaguely considered using them for Compilation Days, but also realized I had a fuckload of compilations so that it would be unnecessary.

So I'm just going to post them over the next several posts and have fucking done with it.

Here we go....

 Mates of State/Fighter D (1999)

Mates of State have moved around a lot, but were based in San Francisco at this time according to the address. I saw them sometime in the late 90's at the 400 Bar touring with Apples in Stereo if memory serves.

Fighter D seems to have been from Oakland.

Orange Cake Mix/Füxa (1997)

Orange Cake Mix is Jim Rao and all who sail with him.

 Füxa were from Detroit, Mi

Still Quarantined Almost a Year Ago.

Like the title says.

Which is good news, since it means I was surviving into last April.

We'll see if it lasts

If nothing else this is the 700th fucking lame ass post on this shitty blog.

Seriously. WTF?

Funny (1992)

Hope.

A pretty generic name for a band which doesn't necessarily make for easy searching via the google machine and which even confused the usually pretty good cloudberry folks.

So this may or may not be the product of one person named Stuart Troop.

Not that it matters.

It was released on A Turntable Friend so you already know it's quality.

Telescope (1994)

This band calling itself the Mary Janes hailed from Indianapolis, IN and haven't apparently updated their website since 2003. It's probably safe to assume it's merely a ghost ship at this point.

According to that website "the mary janes play honest american music from the heart of the midwest."

I'm not exactly sure how that relates to what they were doing way back in 1994, but it's a description of some sort which is usually in short supply around these parts because blah blah blah "dancing about architecture"

But there's some scratchy fiddle and acoustic guitars in there.

"Telescope" is the winner here though.

I'd play that one. It's a good one

I'm Not a Fan of February.

It's the shortest and the longest month. It's the point in the year where I'm generally just completely over being cold and it being Winter and it just keeps on snowing and snowing.
Made even worse this year since it's a Leap Year and there's a whole extra day of the scourge that is the second month.

This calls for happy pop music and a few moments of blissful forgetfulness that I may be called on to shovel a foot of wet miserable winter off the driveway at any moment....

Here Comes Everybody (1993)

This is sweet harmonic pop music. Joyous and happy.
Very unlike my mood.
but it helps.

They put out three full lengths and a handful of singles in their existence and are almost entirely unknown.

Probably because they named themselves "Me" which doesn't make it any easier to look them up on the internet.

That and it's the very sort of harmony filled pop that would get entirely lost in the shuffle of everything else that was going on at the time competing for people's attention.

Let it wash over your weary soul.

Easy Peazy Lemon Squeezy (1990)

You have to appreciate a record that when it starts out you wonder if you've got it actually at the right speed. The first song on this ep by Strawberry Story is just that. Very fast, lo-fi and buzzy.

So with nothing else to stop us... One, Two Three, Four Strawberry's Let's Go!

Two Steps Forward and Three Steps Back

So I'm slowly working my way through everything in alphabetical order for the most part. Problem is that I keep getting new stuff. So I try and get the new arrivals caught up to where I was previously and then suddenly I'm back to the beginning and I have shit tons more to do before I can make any  new progress. (But then again, I'm also seven months ahead here and setting this up sometime last summer by the time you see it.)

I wonder if Sisyphus collected records...

Lap Dog Kiss (1993)

Here we are again at 'B' with the Beatnik Filmstars.

Lo-Fi recording. Songs to be found somewhere in the hiss and static.

Revolt into Style (1993)

These guys pumped out a lot of records in their time on earth. Expect to see more in the future or just pony up some cash and go to their bandcamp page and ensure that they see some of your hard earned for their efforts. Your mother will be proud of you for doing that.

Dates are a Bit Fuzzy at This Point

The internet has kind of let me down with this one.

It's the triumphant (?) return of a compilation on the thirteenth

It's a single sided cheaply recorded thing and I'm not sure exactly when it was released or when I picked it up for a dollar.

It's on the Blackbean & Placenta Tape Club Label who put out lots and surprisingly lots of quick and cheaply made records.

This is one of them.

I'm going with 1997 as the date for this. It just feels right. The internet doesn't seem to fucking know and twenty years later it's close enough for our purposes.

A1 –Pip Proud Black Choir
A2 –Noggin I'm Getting into Dirt Now
A3 –Longstocking Mercyfuck
A4 –Orange Cake Mix Les Viandes
A5 –Magnolias Milan Bach
A6 –Saraspoden Nostalgia

Enjoy?

Meanwhile on either side of the pond

 It's 7 inch compilations time

4 Alternatives (1979)

A four song sampler on Heartbeat Records of Bristol, England bands circa 1979. It's the earnest sound of youth. For whatever reason the Joe Public track is the clear winner for me here. I don't have a dog in this fight, but I put their sole other release in my wantlist after picking this up.

Meanwhile.....

Go Go (1979)

Two out of three bands here are from Philadelphia with the third JJ 180 being from Santa Cruz, Ca. Helen Wheels has some stuff coming up in the near future and I know fuck all about King of Siam.

JJ 180 are named after a highly addictive drug in the novel "Now Wait For Last Year" by Philip K Dick. (It's one of the better ones. Read it.) After a lineup change they became the Realtors whose 7" "Buy or Beware" will be gracing this screen some distant future just like a PK Dick novel and maybe just slightly less addictive.

You have been warned.
