You're on Your Own This Year

Happy fuckin' New Year.

yea.

I'm all out of Fleshtones Lps to spring on you, so you will have to sort your shit out without me this time.

I will only offer something to ring out and in that I quite enjoy..

Tricia Yates Fanclub (2009)

So I was in Seattle having flown out for a first time opportunity to see the Scientists for likely the only time I'll ever have the chance. They played with Mudhoney. It was awesome. The Airbnb was fucking brilliant. I got to hang out with a dear friend. It was a great time.

While I was there and on our last day, I had to make the trip to the further reaches of the city to find Jigsaw Records (which has since relocated to Portland). It was a slow drizzly Sunday and Chris had been thinking about closing when I showed up and spent a shitload more money than I had intended. But it was well worth it. Chris is really cool and we had a long conversation about our mutual love of all things Velvet Crush, the Fall and of course, Boyracer.

That led to him to pull this Lp out by Tricia Yates Fanclub out with some insistence that I should buy this too. He was not wrong.

This is yet another Stewart Anderson solo side project and as good as it ever gets.
Fast, messy, lo-fi and with plenty of Stewart's distinctive amateurish drumming.
12 songs interspersed with dialog from some English TV program from days long gone.

The very stuff of rock and roll at its finest.

So here you go.

I'd also very much like to encourage you to buy your own copy. Jigsaw (as linked above) has vinyl or 555 Recordings bandcamp page has it along with a plethora of other things you may or may not enjoy for download.

Help fund another Tricia Yates Fanclub lp.
The world could use it.

Rounding Out the Month with a Full Length

I'm getting a bit hungry.

I think okonomyaki is on the docket for today, but that won't be until much later.
Which means I have to see what's available to tide me over until then.

After this, I suppose.

Horselaugh on my Ex (2000)

For fuck's sake, this one is almost twenty fucking years old. Where does the time go.

It's our good buddy, Stewart Anderson of Boyracer fame doing his solo thing as he did before moving to the States. This one is lots and lots of noisy staticky distorted lo-fi fuckery of the highest order. It's the lovely sound of gleefully not giving a fuck once the record button is pressed.

Let it lull you into a stupor.

And when you come to, go and give Stewart some of your money so we can have more.

Maybe another Tricia Yates Fanclub lp. That one is bomb, as the kids used to say.

Nearly Done

In which we continue with what was started years ago and continued a few days ago...

No seriously, this is nearly the end. It's a single sided flexi with one song. A new version of a previously released song (see previous post).

These two objects represent the final bits of straight up Boyracer releases from the original run of the band 1992-97 with the exception of a handful of scattered compilation tracks scattered across the world that I'm still tracking down.

The last one I got. The second Sarah records ep which I somehow got ridiculously cheap from an Amazon seller. I'm not complaining. It was worth it.

Now as far as I currently know, there are still four compilations that I need to get to complete this Boyracer '92-'97 discography (barring another handful of cassette only compilations that I don't even want to get into because I'm an obsessive collector, but I have to draw a line somewhere...)

So be forewarned there's still more to dribble out.

(and I'm not ruling out redoing all the rips over again since I've changed my process since then and kind of want to bring them up to current snuff....)

No Seriously, There's Still More...

It's the usual business.
I woke up this afternoon pretty recently. I'm drinking a coffee. I'm trying to get ahead of myself by queuing up a few posts for months in advance because I can and have a vague plan of getting myself a year out and then using the time to go through my own archive of shitty home recordings and bringing them into the digital age for my own sake.

Right now, I'm about seven months out.
You're welcome.

Railway (1992)

What may also seem familiar is that I'm making yet another fucking Boyracer post.
Fuckin' hell.

Here's the third release on Fluf.

West Riding House (1995)

Here's the special 5" single from their time on Zero Hour.
"Boyfriends" was exclusive to this one.

I like Boyracer and I'm a completist.
Deal with it.

1997

It's one of those nights where I have a sudden realization that there is a cat in my lap. I have no conscious recollection of her getting there. It's as if she magically materialized there in a warm purring puddle.

Cat people will understand.

Lucy (1997)

It's conceivable based on the sleeve for this Hulaboy release that one or both of the boys in the band (Stewart and/or Eric) are dog people. Lucy looks like she was a good dog.

I personally don't understand the division of such things. I just like animals. A cat just fits into my lifestyle better. She can be left alone for long periods of time, shits in a box and curls up very nicely with me when I sleep without hogging too much of the bed.
A dog is just so much more of a time commitment. Love them.
Consider it probably for the best if I  don't have one of my own.

 High School Dance (1997)

With nothing to really link posts together, I'm taking the easy  way out with the year. So in the same year that Hulaboy released the above, Danielle Howle committed this single to wax and Sub Pop found it in their beady little hearts to unleash it upon the world. We're glad they did.
Well I am anyway. And at least one friend who I put it on a cassette for in and or around that time.
So that's at least two people. Maybe you'll make it three.

One can only hope.

(Also I think you can punch South Carolina on your Fifty States card with this one)

The Sum of Parts

I'm not feeling a lot of wordiness coming on here.
That's probably not the worst thing that could happen. I'm mostly waiting for a free minute to go and make myself a cup of espresso so I can stay awake up a little later now that I've had to flip my schedule to days from straight nights for a few weeks.
My whole world is topsy turvy and I feel pretty pathetic when I fall asleep at 8pm and wake up at 3:30am. It's just fucking wrong.

Here's Hulaboy

Slip it Inside (1994)

So what happens when two dudes from Boyracer (Stewart Anderson) and Hula Hoop (Eric Stoess) make records together.
Hulaboy.

Now go buy some of the in print stuff over at Jen & Stew.

January 17, 1912 (1995)

I really have nothing to add. It should ideally speak for itself.

Tuesday, March 14, 2017

A year and a half late.

Yeah, I've had this for a long while. Got it mail order.
Should have posted it during the Boyracer shit post fest of 2015, but the rip I made sounded terrible.

It's a charity record so a few corners were cut and the pressing is not the best. I know I've only played it maybe a handful of times and it's still pretty noisy.

The Discogs entry lists this as having a bonus 7" ep. I didn't get that with my copy.

Now I have a sad.

Lots of familiar faces if you've been playing along at home. And some who will become familiar at a later date.
And entirely worth it if for no other reason than Beatnik Filmstars live version of "You Can't Fake a Sadness Like This"

Rolf And Cindy BandSlow Crawl
The Orchids Avignon
Lorelei Burro
Red Letter Day Aeolian Harp (Vinyl Version)
Eva Luna From Here To Who Knows Where
Beatnik Filmstars You Can't Fake Sadness Like This (Live)
Going Public Hauntin'
Antiseptic Beauty Solvent Mind
Eggplant Your History Is Not My History
Boyracer With Even As We Speak Friend
Hellfire Sermons Bill & Sarah
The Seashells Lovebirds
The Bartlebees You've Taken All My Dreams Away
Hula Hoop Stairway To Elizabeth
The Pristines Final

Well Fuck You Too (or Holy Fucking Hell Not More Fucking Boyracer)

Fuck You, Tiger (1995)

It's Air Miami again.

That is all.

And also:

Boyracer/Sabine split flexi (1993)

Yeah, more fucking Boyracer. Deal with it.

Sabine are related to Veronica Lake. They share two members in common. I'll post some Veronica Lake sometime later in this century.

You've got nothing better to do

Scraping the final bits together.

And with this I  think I am done with what I set out to post as far as things go. The randomness that vaguely follows the alphabet more or less will continue afresh by and by and the  six people who poke their noses over here now and again will be pleased. At least until I pick this discography thing up with my Homer & Jethro collection.

And yes, I'm serious about the Homer & Jethro.

Solo home recordings, more or less. And more or less what you expect that to entail and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Somewhere along the line of activity in 1996, Stewart made time to make some recordings with  Amy Linton (who I trust you'll take the time and google if you're curious.) I got both of these mail order from Mr. Anderson in 1997 and then we had a brief bit of global record trading where I dug up some Hasil Adkins for him and he scored the Dolly Mixture compilation disc for me. It was very symbiotic.

And thus I leave things until I get a hair up my butt to post the Hulaboy seven inches...

I've got a short attention span

At least when it comes to music anyway. I am constantly changing out the songs on my phone even though I mostly listen to it on shuffle and never really hear a fraction of the music I have on there.

And so it is with this Boyracer glut. I like it. I intended to post everything I had, but it's actually keeping me from digitizing other things while I mete these records out in small chunks. I mean, it's nice and all that I don't have to think much about what I want to put up here for a while, but I'm ready to move on. I have some records I got in the last couple of weeks I haven't even played yet because I haven't had to fire up the turntable.

So I'm going to dispense with the last couple of these now and save related stuff for later. Then I'm going to finish off the Dentists posts and start back into the singles again. If I can remember where I left off....

You probably don't need this since after the other post you were a good and wonderful person and went to Jen & Stew and got better sounding digital versions from the source. But I include it here for the sake of completeness. It's Boyracer live. Fast and sloppy. Alcohol may have been involved.  You now how it is with these reprobate rocker types is.

Live on WAMH (1996)

Live on the radio. It's likely that less alcohol was involved. Banging out some hits from "In Full Colour." Penultimate release by this incarnation of Boyracer.

1996 continued...

1996. An odd year. I know where I was living and presumably which crappy job I was working and a few other vague things that may or may not have occurred then, if not in the year or two after that. All in all, not a particularly memorable year in and of itself. I existed. I hated my job and life and it was I think, before I started mistakenly dating somebody I should have otherwise avoided like a neurotic plague. Hindsight.

At least it's sunny and mid-summer when I imagine that year and my old cat is still alive and sleeping on the end of my futon on the floor. Perhaps on an old t-shirt I took off before a shower.

Meanwhile, Boyracer continued to pump out vinyl at a steady Mark E. Smith like pace.

 Racer 100 (7") (1996)

The Racer 100 ep was released to celebrate the 100th Boyracer song. An occasion so momentous that it required its release twice in both a seven inch (Turntable Friend) and twelve inch (Blackbean and Placenta) format on two different labels.

It also doesn't hurt that it's probably one of my all time favorite singles in existence. Countless tapes for women included "Yr Unspoken Desires." and to this day  the tiny presumably accidental feedback squeal just before the guitar break gets me. It's one of those perfect little musical moments that make listening exciting.

I've also never been able to decide which format sounds better or which version I like better. There's more songs on the 12", but the 7" is more nicely pressed and packaged. The B&P version is a stamped construction paper sleeve on really thin single sided vinyl. But....

The extended version has few more songs on it to enjoy. It was originally pressed in an edition of 600. One thing to note is the song "Bee to Honey" is a cover of a Tall Dwarfs tune that appeared on their "3 ep's" feature length. It's a pretty good version.

If you're a really good person and not some sponging parasitic bottom feeder you would take the time and click on over to Jen & Stew's site and buy their digital version. It no doubt will sound better than my straight from  vinyl versions, but also includes the "Live at Stache's" lp that I won't be bothered to upload for god knows how long. Weeks? Years? It's only five bucks. Skip a lunch.

The final bit of Boyracer '96 is this oddity released on Jigsaw apparently recorded in Rhode Island on tour. They're acoustic versions of songs recorded elsewhere that seem to have been recorded under the influence of some combination of alcohol, sleep deprivation and giddy glee that comes from the two former while on tour. Not perhaps the most essential versions but moderately amusing. I mean, "Your Unspoken Desires" would be plenty all right and quite lovely if it weren't for the inclusion of somebody making pig noises rhythmically along with the song at various points. Kind of really pulls you out of the moment.

Also the bongo warning is not a lie. Apply with caution.

1996

1996 was rather a busy year for our Boyracer heroes. Lots of things on a number of labels. Here's a few more with very little talking.

(for the record. My Favorite weren't)

The sleeve is a recycled Ropers sleeve folded inside out with a hand stamp. Good way to keep costs down. As is one assumes not having to pay somebody to master two sides of a seven inch, though that seems more like an under utilization of available resources.

Why Popstars Can't Dance

While I'm thinking about it I'll slip this in. There's a couple of Boyracer tracks here that appeared nowhere else as well as a whole fucking shit load off great indie pop songs that you should have a listen to.

I ended up kind of using this as a guide for a lot of contemporary purchases and it was an introduction to a bunch of bands that I ended up listening to a lot at the time and a jumping off place to the genre in general. A whole bunch of which is likely to find there way here as I continue on with this silly waste of time and energy. But everybody needs a pointless hobby to while away the time and keep them too busy to realize they are inevitably and inexorably slipping ever closer to the grave with every passing second. It's something to do.

Enough already with the Boyracer shit.

No.

Third full length. Released during a brief stint on an MCA subsidiary called Zero Hour. This was likely my second exposure to Boyracer after a couple of tracks on the Slumberland "Why Popstars Can't Dance" compilation. (Which I realize I'm going to have to add to this mess since neither of those tracks appeared elsewhere. Plus it's a pretty ace compilation overall.)
I seem to remember picking this up super cheap on a whim because I recognized the name. It was a good buy.

Your regularly scheduled progra...

I'm hungry. I still fear eating, though. (it's still the same flood the queue night as the previous month) I don't feel like saying clever things anymore due to low blood sugar. But I did pop some more ibuprofen and take a nice hot shower so that helps.

Here's the second Boyracer lp.

We are Made of the Same Wood (1995)

The rip here is from the Cd version that I think I picked up cheap a long time ago but if you were a savvy consumer back in 1995 you might have purchased the 10" colored vinyl version from Turntable Friend so that you could also have the  bonus flexi featuring their rendition of "Electricity" by Orchestral Manoevures in the Dark which as I recall the story was originally intended for the record but left off when it was discovered how much OMD's publishing wanted for the privilege. A work around was found when it was subsequently learned that this fee could be bypassed if the recording was a "Promo". So for the vinyl version a bonus Promo flexi was included with "Electricity". It's also included here because I'm like that.

Grind Your Teeth to even more Boyracer

I've got a a really intensely shitty toothache under an old crown. Got in to see my dentist and he drilled a hole to relieve some of the pressure. I'm scheduled for a root canal next week. Eating is pretty much off the table for a while and the constant dull ache even now makes me want to punch a baby.

I think I'm may have to utilize nature's best dental analgesic to numb the pain for the evening.

Irish Whiskey

In the meantime gird your loins, set a determined grimace and muddle along in quiet agony to the angsty sounds of even more Boyracer...

Tour split w/ the Ropers (1994)

I don't think they swung through here on this tour. Wouldn't have mattered. I wasn't aware of either band at the time.

This is one of the other Sarah Records ep's. There's still a third one that I haven't quite decided to splurge on and just go ahead and blow what feels like too much money on getting. Some other day without an incessant dull throbbing in my jaw perhaps.

This wasn't my introduction, but this is probably the biggest catalyst towards feeding that inner record collector drive to hunt and gather all the Boyracer material I could track down. It's chock full of hissy lo-fi goodness, random noises and my favorite version of "You're Breaking his Heart". It's also full of yet more answering machine messages between tracks (something like the dial up modem sound or phones with cords that the youth of today won't understand.) that are vaguely amusing the first time through, but rapidly lose their appeal upon subsequent listening.  I've conveniently separated them out as individual tracks for your playlisting convenience. You're welcome.
